Aspect Ratio: A Guide to Cropping Photos

Aug 26, 2020 | Uncategorized

We get a lot of questions about what is possible when it comes to cropping images. We thought it would be helpful to put together a guide to show you how it all works.

What is aspect ratio and why does it matter to me as a client?

The aspect ratio of a photo is the ratio of its sizes in different dimensions, how the length compares to the height. Some standard sizes are slightly more square while others are more rectangular. Those seemingly small differences can make a big difference in what can be included on the edges of an image.

Family Formals

At weddings, we always shoot formal family photos a little more loosely to accommodate the various aspect ratios for the prints that will be made afterward.

Standard Sizes

To add some context, the sensor size is 2:3, which equates to 4×6 print without any cropping necessary. When you make most any other size, some information will be cropped off the long edges of the image.

Here are the most common print sizes. You can see how their different aspect ratios affect the cropped image. Notice how the plants on the left and right get cropped more with each increase in size.

Customization

If you have an image that absolutely needs to be a certain size and the cropping is an issue, there can be solutions. Talk to us about digitally creating more space around the subjects. It’s not always possible, but often times we can find a way.

Also, if you have a custom need, talk to us! We have accomplished some of our favorite projects through unique requests. Whether it be a long skinny crop or taking an image and cropping it into different sections for unique framing, there are endless possibilities.
