A big part of business is how you come across to your audience, and a headshot is often the first impression. How your target audience perceives your company can affect your business. The effect can be negative if your image doesn’t fit the personality of your company.
Rebecca from ACTS Housing noticed a disconnect between the look of their team headshots and how they perceived themselves. It was one of those things no one noticed for too long. However, instead of being shown as the friendly, warm and light-hearted bunch they are, their previous headshots were dull, a bit dark and a little sad.
That’s when Rebecca set out to find a solution to ACTS Housing’s problem. We chatted with her to get a feel for her business, the brand and how they wanted to achieve their goal. Then, we settled on highlighting a Milwaukee classic – cream city brick. Cream city brick not only establishes local pride and familiarity with the location but it provides that light and warmth she was looking for. We carried it through the shoot’s entirety, from headshots to a large group portrait to create cohesive and welcoming brand imagery.
We love working with companies on this level. It is rewarding to help them figure out what will make them happy. A lot of times, they know they don’t like what they have, but they don’t have the words to describe what the would like. It’s then that we get to play detective and figure it out with them. It is a great feeling to take a client from the first tentative phone call to the final phone call full of excitement about their new images. In this case, we found the locations and really determined the look. Sometimes clients come to us with specific ideas. Other times, we get to really create the vision.

The Team Photo
In addition to the headshots, this company needed a team photo, as well. We made sure to bring the cream city brick motif into this image too. It can be a challenge to get a frame where everyone’s expression is good. Therefore, we have developed some tricks. Some involve timing at the moment, but we can also swap faces if need be. Don’t worry, it’s a painless procedure. This is why we always use a tripod with a group this large. That gives us consistent images to be able to make choices like that. We learned that over the years as a headshot photographer. Luckily, this group was great. They didn’t need any photoshop magic to make them look this good.
We know how busy businesses are. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be in business. We also know that seeing a photo shoot on one’s work calendar doesn’t excite everyone. Thus, we are conscientious about everyone’s time in a situation like this. We want it to be as quick and painless as can be. Please let us know if you need to update your online image. We can come to you or have your team come to us. We can also do a little of both! Whatever look is right for you, we will help you figure it out.
