A Bride Discusses Her Outdoor Engagement Session

Shelby wears many hats in the Front Room family.  Historically, she has been a friend to us and graphic designer for us.  Last year, her role expanded to becoming one of our brides!  We thought who better to give all of you an inside scoop about her experience crossing over to the bride side of the camera, which can be a particularly challenging transition for some.  She found having an outdoor engagement session to be a key part of the process.

“My now husband, Zak, and I were a little on the fence about having an engagement session at first. After all, we would have so many pictures from the wedding! But, after meeting with Eron, he opened our eyes to some really good reasons to have an engagement session, and I’m so happy we decided to do it!

He explained that the engagement session allows for really important solo time with your partner and your photographer, to practice being in front of the camera. I don’t know about you, but I am not asked to look pretty and in love in front of a camera very often! It was so great to be able to talk things through, find out what poses worked for us, and be able to relax and get to know our photographer, which can be hard to do in the craziness of a wedding day.

Another good point Eron made is that it’s nice to have some portraits in normal clothes, that look just like everyday life. And, of course, using a picture for save the dates is adorable!

Since we were getting married downtown, in a very urban, industrial building, we wanted to do a more nature-filled engagement session. We went to a place that was personal to us, a big park near our house where we frequently go to take walks.

Make sure to choose an outfit that fits your location. If your doing something in nature, like we did, go a little more casual. If your going to a fancy location, dress it up!

Another tip, I decided to have my wedding makeup trial done the day of the engagement session! That way I looked camera ready, and felt comfortable with how my makeup would turn out on the wedding day.

Now we have captured personal moments that we can look back on and remember what our lives were like during that special time. So happy Eron talked us into it!”
